Scientists at Lancaster University in England have discovered that LEGO bricks can be used to build ultra low temperature refrigeration chambers because the clamping arrangement between the LEGO blocks causes them to behave as an extremely good thermal insulator at cryogenic temperatures. The ultra low temperature refrigeration devices that can be built with LEGO blocks will be important for scientific developments in areas such as quantum computing.
