Llamas have a long interesting history. They were used by the Inca in Peru for meat, wool and labor as early as 600 AD. After the Spanish conquests of the Inca in the 1500’s the Llama population drastically declined. Since then the population has grown steadily in other areas of the world and today llamas are a cultural phenomenon due to their intelligence and their abilities to help humans in many ways. They provide fur, emotional comfort for those who are ill, they look over livestock and even act as golf caddies!
